I have never been someone you’d consider a morning person. Staying hidden under layers of blankets until I’m forced to greet the world is usually my morning routine. However, I find myself getting up earlier than ever. This is probably due to my boyfriend leaving for work at 5 or 6 am each day. By the time he walks out the door, more than times I’m stuck awake.
The way we start our day can truly set the mood for how the rest of it will go. Some days I wake up and am ready to take on the world. My entire room will be cleaned, breakfast will be made, and I’m dressed by 7 am. Other days, I am laying there scrolling through Twitter until my boyfriend returns from work. That crucial hour spent when I first wake up determines everything. Okay, not everything. I’ve definitely come to see the connection between the way I start my day and spend my day. I’m now determined to create a morning routine that allows me to make every day one that counts.
WHY DO YOU NEED A MORNING ROUTINE?
Each new day is a new opportunity. There is infinite possibilities for what we can do! Creating a morning routine allows you to begin each day with intention. . Every morning we are at our maximum potential. Our energy should be focused in on things benefiting our well-being. When we start the day engaging in positive behaviors, the potential to continue is high.
I’ve noticed the benefits of establishing a morning routine almost immediately. This is probably why almost every successful CEO has one! (check some out here) You’ll feel more productive, less stressed, and have a renewed sense of mental clarity. I think we can all say that sounds good.
MY MORNING ROUTINE
Most mornings I am up around 6:30, but I like to set my alarm for 7 am for the days my body doesn’t wake itself. Pressing snooze sounds so good – I know. However, I notice that I can never press it just once! That’s why I refuse to even press it now. As soon as I hear my alarm, I force myself to start my morning routine. This was something that comes from a lot of self discipline and I even slip up on from time to time – so don’t stress if the first few days it’s hard.
Now it’s time to start my routine!
I immediately begin the day by meditating! This really allows me to clear my mind and enter a positive mindset for the day. I like to do this for 5-10 minutes each morning. I’ve been meditating on and off for a while now, but it’s something I’m still trying to master. What helps me is using guided meditation apps! I love the Calm app and Simple Habit! They both include a wide variety of different meditations to meet all of your needs. I like to either pick a meditation that focuses on something I need to work on or a simple morning meditation. Want to try adding that to your routine? You can use my link here to get two weeks of free meditations from Simple Habit! This is usually followed by stretching my body.
After a nice relaxing meditation and stretch, I grab my journal. This is the perfect time to write out your goals for the day, how you’re feeling – anything! I love just dumping all of my thoughts and emotions on a piece of paper. In a way, it’s similar to mediation as it allows you to focus in and clear unnecessary thoughts. I don’t time myself for this. I allow my thoughts to take me where I need to go.
Now that I have prepared my mind for a beautiful day, it’s time to prepare my body. It may seem unnecessary to schedule in time for your personal hygiene – but it’s beneficial. Taking that extra time to make myself feel fresh and beautiful makes me feel confident for the rest of my day. Hop in the shower! Brush your teeth! Do your multi-step skin care routine And put on REAL clothes – despite not going anywhere. I know how tempting it is to stay in pajamas all day! I love finding a reason to wear my cow onesie, but you feel more productive when you’re looking life ready.
Cleaning My Environment
I don’t know how a tornado seems to hit my room as I’m sleeping – but it happens. I like to clean my room up every morning. Creating a relaxing environment is crucial for me staying stress-free. Especially since I live with roommates, my room is my sanctuary. Doing this each morning maintains organization. I feel more at ease walking into a clean room. This flows into the rest of my day as I feel more productive working in my space.
Nourishing My Body
It’s finally time to eat. If you’re someone that needs to eat around the time you immediately wake up, then feel free to move this up in your routine. Make sure it is on your routine though! Our bodies need to be nourished with foods that will fuel us to conquer the world. A simple but filling breakfast I usually stick with is oatmeal! Whether it’s plain or with fresh or frozen fruits, I’m filled and satisfied. A great thing to practice during practice is eating mindfully. Put away any distractions. Focus in on the act of eating. The smells. The tastes. Immerse yourself in the experience of nourishing yourself. Listen to your body and give it what it needs.
By the time I’m done with everything, it is usually around 8 am. This is when my day begins! As I am now feeling prepared to tackle the world I am able to better help my roommates daughter get ready for school. As I walk back from taking her to school, usually listening to one of my favorite podcasts, I begin to actively plan out my day. Already cultivating a positive mindset, I can better approach each obstacle and opportunity.
