Winter means snow days! I love everything about winter. The cold crisp air, the snow frosted trees – and especially having cozy days at home. There’s nothing better than bundling up at home, layered in blankets and sipping on hot cocoa. Last year in Maryland, winter barely hit. However this winter they are predicting for above average snow fall! That means more snow days at home! Here’s some ways you can have the best cozy snow day at home!
MAKE THE DAY A PAJAMA DAY
Chances are if you’re snowed in, you won’t be planning on leaving the house. So why waste an outfit? I love getting in a cozy and fluffy onesie! It makes me feel like I’m a child again – an extremely warm one. You can find me wearing one similar to this cow onesie all the time. Throw on some slipper socks and you’re ready to go! Comfort is definitely key.
LIGHT SOME CANDLES (AND THE FIREPLACE)
Just because it’s chilly outside doesn’t mean you have to be. The perfect way to warm any room and set a relaxing mood is candles! This also allows you to create a hygge atmosphere. I have a few candles that I love to light in the corner of my room. Those were more fall scented, so I am ready to switch those out! Some of my favorite holiday or winter candle scents are Christmas Cookie by Yankee Candle or Warm Apple Pie by Village Candle. You can even take things up a notch by lighting your fireplace if you have one! I always feel like I’m in a cozy cabin whenever I’m sitting by the fire as the snow is falling.
HAVE SOME FUN IN THE KITCHEN
I don’t know about you, but I love to eat. Especially since the colder months = more filling, satisfying meals. I know it’s tempting to order in on a snow day – thank you Papa Johns for always being open! However, making a heartfelt meal is always 10x more satisfying and you get to create some lasting memories as well. Growing up, the go-to winter meal was chili. It keeps you full and can last until the snow starts to melt away. Make some! Here’s a vegan and non-vegan recipe. Didn’t grab the Christmas Cookie candle? Fill your house with the delicious smells of treats! You don’t have to wait for Santa to come to start baking. Grab some of that baking mix in the cabinet and see what you can do!
Baking Tip! : If you’re vegan or have an egg allergy – replace eggs with applesauce in your cake mix! 1/3 cup of applesauce for each egg. Or use this mixture: 1-1/2 tablespoons vegetable oil mixed with 1-1/2 tablespoons water and 1 teaspoon baking powder per egg.
SIP ON SOME HOT COCOA
Hot chocolate just might be my favorite part of a snow day. I remember me and my younger brother playing joyfully in the snow, running in and out the house to be greeted each time with a warm cup. Back then it was just a simple cup of Swiss Miss (did you know they make Swiss Miss for Keurigs now?!) While that definitely still hits the spot, we can get a little more creative with it. How about making a Starbucks inspired salted caramel hot chocolate? Or try something new and make it in your slow cooker?
NETFLIX AND CHILL
Blankets? Check. Pajamas? Check? Candles lit? Check
It’s a snow day, so crawl back to the couch or the bed! This is the perfect excuse to start that series on Netflix everyone has been talking about (and probably finish it in time to still join in on the conversation). I’ve been binge watching Criminal Minds like crazy! It’s actually on right now as I write this. If you’re looking to get some laughs in, I’ve been loving Bojack Horseman and Trailer Park Boys. I don’t think I would have ever watched those on my own but my boyfriends recommendation led me to finding two of my favorite shows! Go watch them!
GO BE IN THE SNOW
Why do we have snow days? Because of the snow! Let your inner child out to play. Bundle up in all of your thickest, coziest clothes and have fun. Build a snow man, make a snow angel! Just because we’re growing up doesn’t mean we don’t deserve to have fun. I can’t wait for a huge snow fall so I can invite a bunch of people over and have a massive snowball fight and party. If you don’t want to get too cold in the snow, just go outside and walk around. Every snowflake is unique, so admire them. I find looking at the snow and all the frost covered plants to be sooo relaxing. Looking and seeing white for as far as you can see is soothing.
